Tricky Miki wins WA Derby

Tricky Miki, sired by Always B Miki, stamped himself as clearly the best three year old in Western Australia with an emphatic win in the Group 1 WA Derby.

While the margin was just 1.4 metres, the tough manner in which he won showed he was clearly the best.

After settling near the rear, Gary Hall Jnr took Tricky Miki three wide with 1500 metres to travel to sit in the breeze.

Despite doing the extra work he just kept finding and won over Hoppys Way (Art Major) with the filly Taking The Miki (Always B Miki) finishing off strongly for third.

Tricky Miki has been a tremendous horse for connections so far in his career. Purchased at the 2020 APG Perth Yearling Sale for $57,500 by Justin Prentice, Tricky Miki has now won 8 races for earnings of $324,450.

Tricky Miki was bred by Steve Johnson and is out of the Modern Art mare Harriet Elisabeth.

Always B Miki has sired 19 stakes horses from his debut crop, including four Group 1 winners.
