The influence of Captain Crunch continues to grow, with the star sire producing both winners of the $100,000 WA 3YO Sales Classics at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Captain Stirling showed tremendous staying power to claim the colts and geldings division, while Its Maa Time unleashed a barnstorming finish to take out the fillies’ edition.
Bred by Steve Johnson and out of the Northern Luck mare Chemical Romance, Captain Stirling had to do it the hard way, racing without cover for much of the journey. But the tough colt outstayed his rivals in a powerful display of endurance and class.
Meanwhile, Its Maa Time, offered for sale by Copper Lodge and out of the Blissfull Hall mare Maastricht, faced an equally difficult passage. After making a three-wide move with 900 meters to go, she was forced even wider on the home bend but still found another gear to surge past her rivals and score an outstanding victory.
The success wasn’t limited to Western Australia, as Captain Crunch progeny also made a major impact across the Tasman. The stallion sired four three-year-old winners in New Zealand on Thursday and Friday, highlighted by Flashpoint’s impressive victory in the opening heat of the Southern Supremacy.
With standout performers emerging on both sides of the Tasman, Captain Crunch is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young sires in the sport.
